Collection: Necklaces

Avalna is an Indian fashion jewellery brand backed by SM Stores, a family business trading in Arcot, Tamil Nadu since 1975. Our necklace collection features 79 designs from ₹349 to ₹6,499 — temple haram and attigai sets, Kemp chokers, Victorian and rhodium plated bridal pieces, and light everyday chains — in plated brass set with American Diamond, Kemp and glass stones. Avalna ships across India, free on orders over ₹1,000.

Every necklace here is fashion jewellery: a plated brass base with simulated stones. Nothing in this collection is solid gold or solid silver, and no stone is a natural gemstone. Each product page names the plating and the stone before you buy.

What is in this collection, and how it is worn

South Indian necklaces are chosen by where they sit. The attigai rests close at the collarbone and is traditionally the piece worn against the neckline of a saree blouse. The haram falls to the chest or below and is worn over it, usually for weddings and festival days. A choker does the work of an attigai in a lighter, more everyday register, and a pendant chain carries the same design language into office wear.

Kemp work — the deep red and green stones set into matte gold or antique gold plating — is the signature of this region, and it is what most people mean by temple jewellery. Alongside it this collection carries American Diamond pieces in high polish gold, rhodium plated bridal sets in a cooler silver tone, Victorian finish harams, and Navratna-style dollar chains.

These are worn across India, not only in the south. A Kemp choker suits a Navratri evening, a sangeet, a Diwali dinner or a temple visit equally well. Avalna sources from the same suppliers SM Stores has bought from for decades, which is why a matte gold Kemp choker starts here at ₹559 rather than several times that.

Questions people ask

Is Avalna jewellery real gold?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. Every piece is fashion jewellery: a plated brass base finished in gold, rose gold, antique gold, matte gold or rhodium, set with American Diamond, Kemp, glass, resin or simulated stones. The plating and the stone are named on every product page, in the product details panel, so you know exactly what you are buying before you order.

What is the difference between an attigai, a choker and a haram?

Length, mostly. A choker sits highest, at the base of the neck. An attigai sits just below it, close at the collarbone. A haram is the long one, falling to the chest or lower, and is often worn over an attigai for weddings. Every product page in this collection lists the necklace length in centimetres so you can check the fit before ordering.

What is Kemp, and how is it different from American Diamond?

Kemp stones are the opaque deep red and green stones set into temple jewellery, traditionally in a matte or antique gold setting. American Diamond, often shortened to AD, is a clear faceted stone that catches light like a cut gem. Neither is a natural gemstone. Kemp reads traditional and works with silk; American Diamond reads modern and dresses up well for receptions and parties.
