Collection: Earrings

This collection splits roughly in two. Eleven pieces are antique gold plated and ten are matte gold plated — the finishes used for jumkas, chandbalis and Kemp drops, the earrings worn with silk sarees for weddings, festivals and temple visits. The rest are high polish gold, rose gold, rhodium and dual-tone pieces: studs, hoops, leaf drops and contemporary designs that go with everyday and office wear.

A jumka is the bell-shaped drop that most people picture when they think of South Indian earrings. A chandbali is the crescent. Both are statement pieces and are usually worn with the hair up. Twelve designs in this collection carry no stone at all, which makes them the easier daily choice.

Weight matters more in earrings than anywhere else, so Avalna lists it in grams on every product page rather than leaving you to guess from a photograph. Kemp and antique gold pieces run heavier; studs and small hoops are the lightest in the collection.

Is Avalna jewellery real gold?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. Every piece is fashion jewellery: a plated brass base finished in gold, rose gold, antique gold, matte gold or rhodium, set with American Diamond, Kemp, glass, resin or simulated stones. The plating and the stone are named on every product page, in the product details panel, so you know exactly what you are buying before you order.

Are jumkas too heavy for daily wear?

Some are, which is why we publish the weight. Every earring product page lists the weight in grams in the product details panel. As a rule, the large antique gold and Kemp jumkas in this collection are occasion pieces, while the studs, small hoops and stoneless drops are comfortable all day. If you are buying for daily wear, sort by the lower price band and check the weight before ordering.

How do I stop matte and antique gold finishes from dulling?

Plated finishes dull from contact with perfume, hair spray, sweat and water, so put your earrings on last and take them off first. Wipe them with a dry soft cloth after wearing, never a wet one, and store each pair in its own pouch rather than loose in a box where pieces rub. Kept this way, a matte or antique finish holds its colour far longer.
